Papers of Alexander A. Josey

The papers include his correspondence, scripts and broadcasts, research papers, his publications and articles, his personal papers about cycling, also advertisements and technical reports about cycling. Included too are the constitution, rules, agenda and reports of the Road Time Trials Council and its affiliated clubs, 1937-1943, papers of the British League of Racing Cyclists, 1943-1945; Road Racing Council, 1926-1937, and the Road Records Association, 1938-1942; the Women's Road Records Association, 1940, and the Bicycle Polo Association of Great Britain, 1933-1940. The archive contains records about racing events and cyclists, 1895-1942, and papers and publications of many cycling clubs, 1880-1947; catalogues of bicycles and of parts for them, 1897-1938, cycling articles, 1877-1940; press cuttings, scrapbooks, photographs, tours and guides, books and ephemera, 1880-1974.

Alexander A. Josey was born in 1910 in Poole, Dorset, where he attended South Road School. He resurrected the Poole Wheelers Club and was its Vice-President. He worked as a journalist on the 'Poole Herald' and the 'Bournemouth Times' before moving in 1934 to become assistant editor of 'Cycling' under H. H. England, who was editor. He wrote and delivered many wartime broadcasts for the BBC, often of his own personal experiences. He was a keen collector of books and papers of historical interest on cycling. He played bicycle polo and was national secretary of the Road Time Trials Council. He also wrote a popular thriller called 'Accident' and the 12th edition of the 'Cycling Manual and Year Book'. From about 1949 he lived in the Far East, Malaysia and Singapore, where he worked as a journalist until at least 1961, when his card describes him as South East Asia correspondent for Reynolds News and Worldwide Press Service. He was married to Kathleen and lived in Wimbledon.
