Administrative / Biographical History
Salaman was born in 1943, educated at the Skinner's School, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He joined the British Road Services as a junior clerk in 1960 at Hampstead Branch (General Haulage), London before transferring to BRS Parcels where he was promoted to shipping clerk. In the mid 1960s he joined London Transport as a bus driver for one year, berfore moving to the London Ambulance Service as an ambulanceman. In 1971 he started his own road transport business based in Tunbridge Wells with a mixed fleet of vans, buses and lorries. The business went into voluntary liquidation in 1980 and Salaman joined Brooke Bond Oxo Ltd. as Tonbridge Depot transport manager. In 1986 he became transport manager for Biffa Waste Service at Tonbridge and in 1987 he returned to London Transport as Revenue Protection Officer. In 1992 he transferred to the Original London Transport Sightseeing Tours performing supervisory duties within the organisation before retiring in June 2002.
In the later part of his career, Salaman became a City of London tour guide and a guide in Clerkenwell and Islington and Kingston upon Thames. He was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1991 and Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Carmen in 1998 for whom he is also responsible for the commentary at the annual Cart Making ceremony held int the Guildhall Yard before the Lord Mayor. Salaman is a founder member and Hon. Chairman of the Commercial Vehicle and Road Transport Club.
In the course of a lifetime's work in road transport, C.R. Salaman has collected a variety of documentation relating to road haulage and its history, which he has donated to the Centre.
