Administrative / Biographical History

The Miners' Federation of Great Britain was founded in 1888 and became the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), a trade union for coal miners, in 1945.

The Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM) trade union was established in 1985, as the result of a breakaway from the NUM during the miners' strike of 1984-1985. It is based in Nottinghamshire.

The collection has been divided into series. Within these series, items have been catalogued chronologically where possible.
