Administrative / Biographical History

James Gregory was appointed Professor of Institutes of Medicine at Edinburgh in 1776 and Professor of Practice of Medicine in 1790. He became engaged in violent controversy with Dr Alexander and James Hamilton (managers of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the College of Physicians), and was suspended from his fellowship of the Edinburgh College of Physicians in 1808
