Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Athelstan Jack Scamp (1913-1977), company director and industrial conciliator; left school at 14 to work for the Great Western Railway in Birmingham where he played amateur football for West Bromwich Albion. During the 1939-1945 war he served in the Royal Artillery. Later appointments include personnel director, General Electric Company, 1962; member of Devlin Committee of Inquiry into pay and methods of working in docks, 1964; chairman, Court of Inquiry into industrial relations of British Railways footplate staff, 1965; member of Industrial Court (later Industrial Arbitration Board); seconded from General Electric Company as industrial advisor to new Department of Economic Affairs, 1965; chairman of the Motor Industry Joint Labour Council, 1965-1968; knighted, 1968; called in as peacemaker in many different industries; non-executive director, Farfields (Glasgow) shipbuilders, 1967-1968; associate professor of industrial relations Warwick University, 1972; chairman management consultancy firm Urwick, Orr and Partners; companion of Institute of Electrical Engineers; fellow, Institute of Personnel Management and of British Institute of Management; chairman, Coventry City Football Club; deputy lieutenant of Warwickshire.
