Scope and Content

Former employees of the British United Shoe Machinery Company (BUSM) in Leicester talk about their experiences. They reflect on apprenticeships, the tasks they were required to undertake as part of their work, female employees, the BU Social Club, and company pensions.

Administrative / Biographical History

This collection was deposited by Burt McNeill and was the result of a project that created a website and book as well as the interviews. The British United Shoe Machinery Company (BU) was a large manufacturing company based in Leicester from 1899 to 2000. At its peak it employed 4000 people. These interviews were carried out in 2012 and 2013.
