Administrative / Biographical History

The Glasgow Fire Insurance Society , Glasgow, Scotland, was established in 1803  with a share capital of £100,000 divided into 400 shares at £250 each. Its first directors included; David Dale ( 1739-1806  ), Alexander Oswald, Gilbert Hamilton, Walter Ewing Maclae, Archibald Smith, John Stirling, James Buchanan and Archibald Grahame. It was dissolved with effect from 16 July 1811  when its business was transferred to the Phoenix Fire Office, London, England.
