Turnpike trusts were authorised by private Acts of Parliament to administerroads on which tolls were charged at gates. The first turnpike trust wasestablished by private Act of Parliament in 1663 to repair and maintain a15-mile stretch of the Great North Road between Wadesmill and Royston inHertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The number of new turnpike Acts rosesteadily from four in the 1690s, to 10 in the 1700s, 22 in the 1710s, and 46in the 1720s. by 1750 most of the major through routes in England had beenturnpiked. The most active period for the formation of turnpike trusts wasbetween 1751 and 1772, when 389 new Acts were passed.
