Scope and Content

Papers and press-cuttings on politics in South Africa and Lesotho, including: electoral returns for the Lesotho general election, Marematlou Freedom Party election material; 1965 issues of Makatolle (Basutoland Congress Party), Sefako (Basutoland National Party Youth) and Mohlanka (Basutoland National Party). South African material includes Spence's seminar paper on the South African Communist Party (1970) and United Party leaflets.

Administrative / Biographical History

Born in South Africa, Spence was educated at the Boy's High School, Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and The London School of Economics. His academic career included academic posts at the University of Natal (1958-60); Rockefeller Junior Research Fellow at the LSE, (1961-62); University College, Swansea (Wales) (1962-73); University of Leicester (Professor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, 1973-91). From 1991 to 1997 he was Director of Studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) then Academic Adviser to The Royal College of Defence Studies, where he edited the Seaford House Papers, 1999-2007. He was a Visiting Professor at The Universities of California, Los Angeles (1965 and 1970); Zimbabwe (1978); Witwatersrand (1980 and 1985); Capetown (1982 and 1986); Natal (1985 and 1988); Pretoria (1997).
Spence was awarded an OBE in the Jubilee Honours List in 2003 and has received honorary fellowships from the Universities of Staffordshire, Northampton, Swansea and King's College London, and honorary doctoral degrees from the Universities of Leicester, Witwatersrand and Nottingham Trent.
