Administrative / Biographical History

The company was started in 1872 by William Spence, with a workforce of several hundred outworkers (home knitters of gloves and socks), supplied with wool by Spence.

In 1878 machinery was purchased from Harrison's of Manchester. A granite factory was constructed in 1910 on Gordon Street, and was expanded on over the course of the 20th century (the building is now Huntlry Business Centre).

The factory closed in 1993.
