Llecheiddior Papers

A collection of 2046 items collated by R. H. Evans, over half of which consist of valuations for rent fixation or mortgage purposes, probate and public utility schemes, mainly in Lleyn and Eifionydd, during the years 1922 and 1939, and include valuations in connection with the exchange of properties between the Broom Hall and Glynllifon estates, 1934-5. The remaining items comprise reports, under the Cultivation of Lands Order, 1917, on farms and estates in various parts of Caernarvonshire; reports on claims for compensation arising out of floods in the rivers Conwy and Lligwy, September, 1918; reports to the Caernarvonshire Smallholdings Committee; papers originating whilst R. H. Evans was consulting agent to Colonel Vaughan Wynn of Boduan and Rug, 1926-1935, and relating to arrears of rent, procedure before assessment committees, negotiations for road adjustments, etc.; papers (formerly belonging to Thomas Roberts of Portmadoc) concerning the Pwllheli and Porthdinllaen railway project, 1883-1884, and the Pwllheli West End Tramway, 1895-1896; minutes and accounts of the Lleyn Livestock Improvement Society, 1914-1918; papers relating to Bardsey Island and the running of its motor boat, 1928-1933; and to fishing rights in the rivers Dwyfach and Dwyfor, 1928-1934; plans relating to schemes under the Housing Acts adopted by the Lleyn Rural District Council, ca.1920; and maps (detached from sales catalogues) of farms and lands in Llanbedrog, Llangian, Llanengan and Rhydyclafdy.

R. H. Evans was a man of many interests. For a time he was a member of the Agriculture Department at Bangor University and for years he was senior lecturer in Agriculture at the University of Reading. He became the first Principal of Madryn Castle Farm School, and was a frequent judge in the Royal Dairy and Royal Agricultural Shows. After retiring from the Principalship, he set up as a licensed valuer, and was often asked to act as arbitrator between other valuers, not only in Caernarvonshire, but in Anglesey, and even as far afield as Breconshire. Probably his chief work was to assist in the negotiations for the exchange of properties between the Broom Hall and Glynllifon estates. He took the lead in forming the Lleyn Livestock Improvement Society about 1915 and the South Caernarvonshire Farmers' Association in 1920. It was he also who in around 1920 drew up the memorandum on the proposed light railway for the Lleyn peninsula. He became a valuable member of the Caernarvonshire County Council and eventually of its Records Committee, which did such doughty work - revolutionary in fact - in bringing the rich records of the county under control and classification. Years before that he had been interested in the tours of the Cambrian Archaeologicals, acted as Lleyn correspondent for the Ancient Monuments Board, and wrote several letters to the offices of the National Museum of Wales about ancient material he had come across. He was also deeply interested in books and manuscripts and was a great benefactor of the Library of the University of Wales, Bangor.
