Administrative / Biographical History

Northwards along the coast from Newborough in Anglesey, north Wales is an estuary formed by the Afon Cefni which flows across the island from a point north of Llangefni. Much of this river flows through a low-lying valley, forming the Malltraeth Marsh/Cors Ddyga. The river flowed without restriction through this area, until 1810 when an embankment was built to exclude the sea's tidal influences. The river was subsequently canalised reclaiming much of the area for agriculture. Many parts of the valley still have a wet meadow environment, and are protected as sites of scientific interest.
