Scope and Content

Papers relating to the activities of Ensoc, the Entertainments Committee of the University of Nottingham Students' Union, including: a newspaper cutting from the Guardian showing a photograph of guests at a concert organised by Ensoc in the Great Hall; poster and leaflet advertising an Ensoc production of Baker Burkett's Dozen in 'At the Drop of a Brick' (starring Tony Burkett); programme for an Ensoc and Nottingham Revue Club production 'Natural Break: an original televue' 2-3 March 1961; poster for an Ensoc production of 'Collidascope: an intimate review for the intellectual phew'; typescript information about an Ensoc production of 'The Son of Kit-e-Kat' produced by Tony Burkett and featuring David Guest; photocopied flyers for an Ensoc party at the Greyhound Inn, Beeston on 7th October 1959, in the style of an election flyer from Gordon Wainwright plus handwritten draft wording; handwritten lists of the order of an evening of performances including 'Lucius Fizz', with notes on costumes and annotated script for 'Lucius Fizz'; programme information on an Ensoc production of 'Freshers they come..'; script for 'Ensoc 1957 Thirteenth Night'; script for 'There Ain't No Justice'; script for 'Opening Chorus 1959, 'Top People' and 'Millionaire'; script for 'I was a puffed wheat for the FBI'; script for 'Aisle be seeing you' by Tony Burkett. Carnival Committee papers and ephemera, including: poster for the 1959 charity carnival with the slogan 'sparatannaforthacarnival'; poster/banner for the grand carnival procession starting at the Forest; multiple square card flyers for the 1958 and 1959 carnivals featuring an image of the duck (duplicates have been weeded); tickets and programme for a carnival concert featuring Humphrey Lyttleton and George Melly at the Albert Hall, Nottingham 14 October 1959; newspaper cutting of a photograph of Tony Burkett auctioning Ben Lyon's tie in Old Market Square, Nottingham to raise money for the carnival; book of tickets for the 1958 carnival in aid of Portland Training College and other charities (tickets feature photographs of 10 female students from Sutton Bonington and the Nottingham Technical and Art Colleges [later Trent University] photographed by a male Nottingham University student, asking ticket holders to select the six most charming women; leaflet and map advertising the route of the 1958 carnival; leaflet for the 1957 carnival with programme of events; page from the front of the Guardian Journal featuring photograps of students ihnvolved in the 1959 carnival including Sheena Buchanan holding a model rocket with Ruy Tchao and Pete Griffith; poster for a 1958 performance by the Sadlers Wells Operatic Quartet at Nottingham's Albert Hall; Nottingham Evening News newspaper article about the Carnival in Ilkeston, featuring photographs of Tony Burkett, Alan Fretwell, Denise Flint and Alan Flint, Anne Parsonage, Tony Barker and Kevin Poulter [some annotations naming individuals]; copy letters sent by Guest in his role as Transport Manager thanking companies for loaning vehicles for the carnival floats; handwritten article in Guest's handwriting about student rag stunts over the years intended for publication in Gongster, the student newspaper; photocopied minutes of the fifth meeting of the Carnival Committee held on 17 March 1959 with David Guest as Chair (also minutes for the 7th and 8th meeting for 1958 with the Carnival Director as Chair); handwritten notes on the organisation of Carnival events including information on the amounts raised from 1953-1956; sheets of blank headed notepaper showing the 1959 Carnival target; photocopied typed suggestions arising from meetings of the Carnival Committee with pencil annotations, 1959; typescript list of events for the 1959 carnival. Material relating to Wortley Hall including tickets and programme for a production of Peter Ustinov's 'The Love of Four Colonels' produced by Wortley Hall Dramatic Society; a Wortley Hall Association address list 1959. (MS 995/4)

Papers relating to activities as Transport Manager for the Congregations for the Conferment of Degrees, including instructions students and ticket-style flyer advertising transport. (MS 995/5)

Leaflets for University of Nottingham [Students] Union pre-sessional conference tours, 1957 to 1959 (David Guest was involved in giving the tours in 1957), with a typescript sheet compiled by Bryan Harris containing an introduction to the University with elevation plans of the Portland and Trent Buildings on the reverse showing 'Women's Quiet Room', 'Billiards Room', 'Sisson's and Parkers Shop', etc. (MS 995/6)

Papers dating c.2012 relating to Bryan Harris which were compiled for his 80th birthday celebration, including: photocopies of material from the collection such as a Gongster article (Vol. 8 No. 12, 27 June 1958) about Harris being elected as President of the Union; some words describing Harris, and a photocopied newspaper cutting about a restored penny farthing which was ridden by Harris as part of the Carnival parade; a newscutting about plans for the Union Ball including walks round Nottingham offered by Harris. University of Nottingham publications collected by Guest relating to his time there, including: copies of the University of Nottingham [Students'] Union handbook containing photographs of many of the individuals mentioned above who were Union officials; a copy of 'Survey' with Gongster article newspaper cutting reviewing it and discussing the value of the publication [puzzle at the back completed by Guest]; copy of the Student Social Survey 1962; two editions of Gongster 9 Nov. 1959 and 6 Nov. 1959 with feature on the Carnival; copies of the 1957, 1958 and 1959 'Chickerah' charity carnival magazines containing more detailed information on the activities featured above. Administrative / Biographical History

David W. Guest was Transport Manager for the Students' Union in 1958 and a member of the Carnival Committee and Ensoc, the Entertainments Committee of the Union; he also wrote playscripts for productions involving Tony Burkett and may have had some connection with Wortley Hall. He was involved in the planning of the Carnival Processions and related activities and he or his friends feature in some of the Chickerah and other publications which he collected whilst a student at the University of Nottingham.
