Acquisition Information

Purchased by Sir Thomas Phillipps from Thorpe in 1836, and subsequently Phillipps MS 9441. Lot 395 in the Sotheby's Phillipps sale, March 1895. Purchased of Tregaskis, 28 Mar. 1895.

The BL copy of J. Ames, Typographical Antiquities, 1749 (shelf-mark C.60.0.5) has numerous annotations in Herbert's hand, and contains, bound in at a later date, manuscript sheets similar to CUL MS Add. 3313-18. Among these sheets is a list of Herbert's abbreviations for his reference works.
