The material mostly dates from the 1920s until the present and includes reports, town plans and planning proposals, and maps. The collection also includes archival material relating to new towns in Scotland, with particular emphasis on Livingston.

The material was assembled by the former Planning Exchange in order to build a comprehensive database on the development of the UK new towns and to carry out research projects.
