Middle East and Islamic Women

Scope and Content

Exeter University Library has a collection of around 830 monograph titles on Middle Eastern and Islamic women, plus around 90 volumes on women writers in Arabic and the image of women in Arabic literature, and three serial titles on women in the Middle East. The bulk of the material (550 titles) is in the fields of sociology, anthropology, history and general gender studies; the Library also holds around 100 relevant titles in the field of economics, 100 titles on women in Islam (plus 30 on women in Islamic and modern Middle Eastern law), 25 on Middle Eastern women's education, 10 on the bibliography of Middle Eastern women and another 15 titles of other subjects to do with women (art, dancing, sport, medicine, etc.). Regionally, the Library has material on all areas of the Middle East, but books about women in the Arabian Peninsula are an area of particular strength 65% of the collection is in English, 30% in Arabic and 5% in other languages
