Notes on the Cargill family of Rattray, Perthshire, compiled by Featherstone Cargill.

Extracts and complete transcripts from a variety of sources, including Perthshire and Forfarshire Register of Sasines, the Register of Deeds and Dunkeld Diocesan and Presbytery Records, principally related to Donald Cargill, (fl.1585), John Cargill, Donald Cargill, Presbyterian minister and Covenanter, and their collateral descendants.

Included in Volume I are two newspaper cuttings on a Donald Cargill Memorial Service, 1896, together with an autograph letter signed by Featherstone Cargill to the Librarian of St Andrews University offering the four volumes to the university.

The family name comes from a village of the same name in East Perthshire; the original Kergylls probably came from France. The most famous of the Rattray Cargills was Donald Cargill (1627-1681), a field preacher and covenanter who denounced the Restoration and the resumption of episcopacy, rejected royal authority and excommunicated Charles II. He executed for treason.
