The Dennis Marsden Collection

This collection covers the following main works with original data and contextual information; Mothers Alone- Poverty and the Fatherless Family; Salford Slum / Rehousing Study; Mothers and Daughters; ACE Parents & School Survey; Change & Community (contextual papers only); Education & the Working Class; Working Men's Clubs in Huddersfield; Working Class Community; Poverty (Pilot). In total there are approximately 35,000 pages in the collection

From 1964 until his retirement in 1999, Dennis Marsden was Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex. This collection comprises what remains of the research papers gathered during the course of his career. His main publications are: Education and the Working Class (1962) and Working Class Community (1968) (both with Brian Jackson); Mothers Alone: Poverty and the Fatherless Family (1969); Workless: Some Unemployed Men and their Families (1975); Scheming for Youth: YTS and the Enterprise Culture (1990) (with David Lee et al).

By written application to either the Librarian or Deputy Librarian. A letter of introduction may be required and prospective users will be obliged to sign an undertaking outlining the terms and conditions of access to the research materials.

In consultation with academic colleagues, the library special collections acquisitions staff evaluate collections by assessing their relevance to the teaching and research interests of the University.

The collection was acquired and prepared for archiving by Qualidata in 1999 and deposited in the NSPSCA in 2002.
