• the typescript of an unpublished essay, 'The Wreck of the Deutschland', 1965.
• correspondence relating to research for the essay, 1961-5
• correspondence, mainly with publishers, about attempts to publish his work, 1965-81, with photographs of documents concerning the wreck.

Rev. Philip Martin (fl 1961-81).

The Deutschland was a steamship which sailed as part of the Norddeutscher Lloyd weekly packet service between Bremen and New York. On 6 Dec. 1875 The Deutschland ran aground on Kentish Knock in the mouth of the river Thames. 157 passengers, mainly German emigrants, and crew lost their lives. The tragedy inspired Gerard Manley Hopkins to write his poem "The Wreck of the Deutschland."
