Scope and Content

This collection contains the author' printed copy of The Welsh Vocabulary of the Bangor District in two bound volumes, with copious handwritten additions and notebooks containing further additions and corrections to the book. Also contains notebooks with detailed study notes by O.H. Fynes Clinton on the words and phrases used in Cnoc Na nGabha ein by Micheal Breathnach (1906).

Administrative / Biographical History

Osbert Henry Fynes Clinton (1869-1941) was Professor of French at the University College of North Wales (now the University of Wales, Bangor), from 1904 until his retirement in 1937. He was educated at Oxford University.

His book The Welsh Vocabulary of the Bangor District is regarded as a masterpiece and model for the study of dialect. It was first published in 1913 and reprinted in 1995.

Arrangement

Material was received on separate occasions, arranged according to record type and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
