Portmadoc Sailmakers Papers

Scope and Content

Material consists of the records of Messrs. Jones and Morris, Sailmakers of Portmadoc. It includes daybooks (dating from 1872 to 1919); accounts of wages paid and quantities of sails fitted etc, (dating from 1895 to 1896). Also includes a rigging plan for a ship called the Earshall.

Administrative / Biographical History

Messrs. Jones and Morris, Sailmakers of Portmadoc, a seaport town in Gwynedd, is listed in Slater's Directory for 1895, as Peter Jones & Co. As well as making sails, the company also fitted them and supplied accessories for ships.

Portmadoc, being close to the larger port of Caernarfon, was also the location for shipbuilders in the nineteenth century and its harbour was used for the transport of slate from the nearby quarries.

Material is arranged in chronological order and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
