Posters from the civil rights era - an online exhibition

Scope and Content

A selection of Irish civil rights era posters created by People's Democracy.

People's Democracy, PD, was formed at a mass meeting of students in Queen's University Belfast, four days after a civil rights march had been brutally attacked by police in Derry in October 1968. PD's membership included large numbers of students from both Protestant and Catholic backgrounds. It became a driving force within the civil rights movement. Although committed to nonviolence, its marches were often met by attacks by loyalists and the RUC.

The first eight posters shown were made in Belfast. The Belfast posters were all produced between the end of August and the end of September 1969. The rest of the posters in the exhibition were produced in the London Poster Workshop.
