Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The National Union of Paper Mill Workers was founded in 1890 to cater for unskilled mill workers who were not covered by the Amalgamated Society of Papermakers. It is believed that at some time during its existence the National Union of Paper Mill Workers absorbed the Vellum and Parchment Makers' Society. On several occasions the National Union of Paper Mill Workers sought an amalgamation with the Amalgamated Society of Papermakers but were met by rejection each time. As a result the National Union of Paper Mill Workers entered into negotiations with the National Amalgamated Society of Printers' Warehousemen and Cutters. The two unions amalgamated in 1914 to form the National Union of Paper Workers (amended almost immediately to the National Union of Printing and Paper Workers). In 1894 the National Union of Paper Mill Workers received the remaining funds of the Scottish Operative Papermakers' Trade Protection Society which had ceased to function in 1873.
