Scope and Content

In 1828, John Bicheno of Cambridge, breeches-maker, was granted a 40 year lease from the master, fellows and scholars of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, of a tenement next to the Eagle Inn in Benet St, parish of St Benedict, Cambridge, paying an annual rent of #1 6s 8d and 'one pound of good Barbary Sugar'. Having obtained the college's consent to alienate, Bicheno now assigns this tenement by way of mortgage to William Adams of Cambridge, gent, in return for a loan of #500. Nominal repayment date is 8 June 1839. Upon any default, the tenement passes to Adams in trust to pay off all moneys owed to him, with interest and costs. Agreement on seeking renewals following default, if necessary. The property has been insured by Bicheno against fire in #500 under Norwich Union policy number 2,512, and the policy is hereby assigned to Adams by way of further security. 2 pages, signed and sealed by both parties, witnessed by W G Ashton of Cambridge, solicitor, and by his clerk ?T P Hart, duty stamps. Endorsed with receipt for consideration money, same signatures. Further endorsed in pencil: 'Eagle Inn', and by Ashton: '8 April 1842. The #500 secured by this mortgage is included / in the ?fresh mortgage to Mr Adams this day executed for #650'. Parchment supplied by John Smith of Long Acre, engraving by Silvester of The Strand. The consideration has been altered from #550 to #500 throughout.
