Scope and Content

Most of the contents relate to the Advisory Committee on Medical Research. Beyond correspondence relating to his appointment and its renewal, this series appears to contain nothing else relating to the Expert Panel on Human Reprodution.

SZ attended all of the 15th to 18th sessions of the Advisory Committee on Medical Research, 1973-76, to which File SZ/WHO/2 refers. The sub-files include agenda, documents for discussion, and reports of proceedings. Sessions included Round Table discussions.

This Series is to some extent complementary to Series SZ/ZP, Zuckerman Project (EEC-UK Initiative in the Socio-Medical Field, 1969-1976).

A number of WHO publications are now to be found in that part of Lord Zuckerman's personal library bequeathed to UEA and now joined with his Archive.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Advisory Committee on Medical Research of the World Health Organization (WHO) was established in 1959 to provide the Director-General with the necessary scientific advice in relation to the research programme [letter, Martin Kaplan, Secretary of the ACMR, to Solly Zuckerman, 23 February 1973, in File SZ/WHO/1]. The eighteen-member Committee met annually in Geneva, usually in June.

Zuckerman served on the Committee for one four-year term, from January 1973 to December 1976. He was simultaneously appointed to the Expert Panel on Human Reprodution for a four-year period. His membership of this Panel was renewed for four successive 2-year periods, and then in March 1984 for one more year.
