Lord Uxbridge Marriage Settlement Papers

Comprises marriage settlements of Lord Uxbridge (later the Fifth Marquess of Anglesey) and Lady Uxbridge, 1898.

The Plas Newydd estate, situated at Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll on Anglesey, north Wales was home to the Paget and Bayly families who held the title Earl of Uxbridge and, after 1815, Marquess of Anglesey when the then Lord Uxbridge was given the latter title for his heroism at Waterloo.

Henry Paget, the fifth Marquess of Anglesey (1875-1905) was a colourful, flamboyant character who converted the chapel at Plas Newydd into a private theatre, known as the Gaiety Theatre and brought in theatre companies to stage lavish productions of popular plays and pantomimes. His passion for jewellery and clothes led him to bankruptcy. In 1898 there was a settlement prior to the marriage of Henry Paget and Lilian Florence Maud Chetwynd, elder daughter of Sir George Chetwynd of Grendon Hall, Warwickshire. There were no children from this short-lived marriage and when Lord Uxbridge died without issue the estate passed to his first cousin Charles Henry Alexander Paget. In 1976, his son, the seventh and present Marquess gave the house to the National Trust, which has since administered the property.
