One handmade 'magazine' constructed by Scottish ladies forming a group called 'The Cavalier Club', composed of Barbara E. Smythe (editor), Susy F. Lumsden (treasurer), Jean Drummond, Victoria A. Drummond, Frances A. Drummond, Doreen Arbuthnot, and Susan Newdegate. The magazine is entitled The Calavier and was to be borrowed by a select group of recipients, to help raise funds for the war effort. This is the Double Xmas no. 1916, vol IV. It includes short stories, poems, and illustrations and watercolours. One illustrated poem is entitled 'The Ballad of a "Diable Bleu"', and is 'a true story told by a Chasseur Alpin home on leave, and put into verse by E. Beatrice Smythe'. Another story, 'Robin's Wish', concludes by noting that 'We never saw Cousin Paul again. A year later he was killed in the Great War - fighting on the Russian front (I can't spell thename of the place he was killed at)' - this is followed by a handmade Christmas card entitled 'Christmas Leave', showing a young man in naval uniform sitting by the fireside surrounded by children.
There is also a photograph album of the Smythe family (Barbara Smythe was the editor of The Cavalier), containing black-and-white photographs of the Smythe family and their friends covering the period from autumn 1924 to April 1930. Most pictures are captioned.
