Administrative / Biographical History

In 1920  , Mr H E Honer proposed the formation of an institution to cater for the specialised interests of engineers engaged in manufacture. In 1921  , a meeting was held at the Cannon Street Hotel, London, at which it was decided to form an organisation that would establish the status and designation of production engineers. Consequently, the Institution of Production Engineers was formally incorporated in 1931  . The Institution organised conferences and published 'The Production Engineer', and also had a very active Research Department and Standards Committee. In 1961  the Institution had around 13,000 members. Local Sections held monthly meetings at which lectures were given on technical subjects. The Glasgow Section was formed in 1938  , with J B Lang as its first President. Committee meetings were held at the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders, with monthly lecture meetings at various local hotels in the Glasgow area. The total membership for the Glasgow Section in 1959 was 285, rising, by 1961, to 340, with almost 100 student and graduate members. Sometime after 1972, the Institute of Production Engineers became know as the Institution of Manufacturing Engineers which amalgamated with the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1991. The Glasgow Branch now forms part of the Scotland South West Branch of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.
