Scope and Content

This collection comprises of the records of Michael Parish Commissioners, Michael Village Commissioners and Michael District Commissioners including:
- minute books;
- cashbooks and ledgers;
- account books;
- expenditure accounts;
- rate and payment books;
- valuation lists;
- bond books;
- copy letter books;
- Ministry of Food ration books;
- rat extermination records;
- a slaughterhouse license stub book;
- commissioner elections records;
- plans;
- publications and reports produced by local government boards;
- records relating to the organisation of royal visits and celebrations;
- photographs.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Local Government Amendment Act, 1894 provided for the seventeen ancient parishes of the Isle of Man to become local government districts with
their own commissioners, as such Michael Parish Commissioners was established. However, in 1904 Michael Parish Commissioners received complaints from the Local Government Board about the water supply to Michael Village. This led to pressure to have the village declared a special district for the purposes of "water supply and drainage under the Local Government Act 1904." In a public meeting held at the Court House on 18 Jan 1905 it was unanimously agreed that the village should be formed into a separate village district and as such, five village commissioners were elected on 8 Nov 1905. Despite the separation between Michael Parish and Michael Village Commissioners, in certain areas they did work collaboratively. They operated on joint committees including the Kirk Michael Guardians of the Poor, the Court House Management Committee and the Royal Arrangements Committee. They were also involved in the organisation of various events and celebrations in Kirk Michael. The Michael Village and Michael Parish Commissioners remained in place up until the 1st April 1989 when they decided to amalgamate and form Michael District Commissioners, who remain in operation to this day.

Custodial History

The records comprising this series were fully transferred to the IOMPRO under section 3(4) of the Public Records Act 1999 on 11 October 2018 on the authority of the Clerk of Michael District Commissioners and members of the Board of Commissioners. Prior to transfer to the Public Record Office they were held at the Michael Commissioners Office, Commissioners Office, Main Road, Kirk Michael, Isle of Man, IM6 1ER.
