Administrative / Biographical History
In 1900 Sir Donald Currie, the founder of the Castle Line, joined forces with the Union Line to form Union-Castle, and the Cayzer family, in 1956, merged their interests in Clan Line Steamers with those of Union-Castle to form The British & Commonwealth Shipping Co. Ltd. The Clan Line was founded by Charles Cayzer, later Sir Charles Cayzer Bt. in 1878. His grandson Sir Nicholas Cayzer Bt, and other members of the family take an active part in the management of the group, which is controlled by family interests.When founded in 1878, the Clan Line's first sailings were to India, but realising the possibilities of sailings to South Africa from the North of England, they inaugurated a service to Cape Colony. Regular operated to Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, South and East Africa. British & Commonwealth Shipping Co Ltd expanded into financial services in the 1980s before going into administration in the 1990s.
