Papers of Archibald Hyslop

Scope and Content

Autographed letters addressed to Archibald Hyslop, from literary and other well-known figures, responding to invitations sent in his capacity as student office bearer at the University of Aberdeen, to speak at various university functions, 1912 - 1914. Most of the letters are type-written, and almost all are apologies, declining his invitations. Their chief interest lies in the autographs of their writers, who include A.J. Balfour, J.M. Barrie, Rudyard Kipling, Bonar Law, John Masefield, George Bernard Shaw, and W.B. Yeats

Administrative / Biographical History

Archibald Forbes Hyslop, son of Robert Hyslop, schoolmaster, was born in Aberdeen in 1892, and graduated from the University of Aberdeen MA 1914, and PhD 1925. He served in the 4th Gordon Regiment during the First World War, after which he returned to Aberdeen, where he completed a further 2 years study at the University, and in 1921 was appointed assistant classics master at Aberdeen Grammar School. In 1924 he moved to Manchester Grammar School, but in 1928 returned to Scotland where he was appointed one of His Majesty's Inspectors of Schools in Scotland, a role which saw him based first in Glasgow, followed by Aberdeen and latterly, Melrose. He married Winifred Reid, a teacher at Glasgow Academy, on 30 Jun 1942, but died suddenly the following year, in Feb 1943, of a brain tumour.

Hyslop was a keen supporter of the Boy Scout movement, a skilful amateur photographer, a writer and composer of songs, and collector of the works of modern artists. Under the name of Forbes Hazelwood he wrote songs for Harry Gordon, and several other works, the original manuscripts of which have, sadly, since been lost. After his death, his collection of paintings, which included works by Peploe, Gillies, Hunter and Geddes, was bequeathed to the Aberdeen Art Gallery. An exhibition was held in the Autumn of 1993.
