Scope and Content

Sales ledger, 1907-1910, containing details of sales to many early settlers in Kenya. Lists names of customers, their purchases and the prices paid. Also includes details of purchases by corporate customers (eg Survey Department, Trigonometry Branch; Veterinary Department; East African Telegraph Department). Individuals include G. Williams, A.H. Wardle, R. H. Wilson, F. H. Blockley. Photograph of the firm's stand at the Kenya Agricultural Society Show, Nairobi, c1939. Bills of sale, c1930-1939 including sale of land in Nairobi township.

Stephen Ellis and Company was a hardware store in Nairobi, Kenya. It was purchased by Arthur Ashworth shortly after the first world war. It closed down in 1974.

Archivist's Note

The business is one of the oldest of its kind in Nairobi, and was established in 1904 by the gentleman whose name it bears. After his death in 1924 it was continued by his partners, Mr A. Ashworth and Mr J.G. Davidson, the present owners, each of whom is actively engaged in its management.
