John Burford Carlill Papers

John Burford Carlill was born in Hull. He entered as a student of University College, London in 1838, where he gained several medals and became house surgeon of University College Hospital. Carlill was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons on 1842. After graduation he established a practice in London, firstly in Berners Street, and later in Weymouth Street, Portland Place.

On 31 Mar 1860 Carlill contracted diphtheria from a baby he was attending, and was examined by Sir William Jenner and other physicians. Jenner described the case in his work 'Diphtheria: its symptoms and treatment', 1861, page 75. Carlill's subsequent tracheotomy was the first successful such operation in an adult on record.

Carlill died on 22 Jul 1874.
