Administrative / Biographical History

Leif Mills was born on 25 March 1936. Having graduated from Balliol College, Oxford in 1957, he became research officer of the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) and editor of the union journal, the 'Bank Officer', in 1960, assistant general secretary in 1962, deputy general secretary in 1968 and general secretary in 1972. He retired from this office in 1996, when the union had become the Banking, Insurance and Finance Union. He was a member of the Trades Union Congress General Council, 1983-1996, TUC president, 1994-1995, and vice-president, 1995-1996. He also served on a number of public bodies concerned with issues including education and training, financial services and Civil Service and armed forces pay. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1995. He died in December 2020.
