Scope and Content

Accounts, including bills of loading of slates shipped at Moel-y-don in Y Felinheli, Caernarfonshire by William Edwards and the Dinorwic Slate Company, 1820-1845. Of particular interest are the details of ships, local and otherwise, engaged in slate traffic during this period.

Administrative / Biographical History

Y Felinheli, sometimes known as Portdinorwic, is a village located between the towns of Caernarfon and Bangor, north Wales. It was once a thriving port on the Menai Strait with a well-sheltered harbour. Slates were transported from Dinorwic Quarry by light railway to the harbour and from there, shipped to all parts of the world.
