British Steelwork Association

This collection contains: records concerning international propaganda for the utilisation of steel, 1937-1939; various records concerning steel construction, 1936-1943; records concerning the British Iron and Steel Federation post-war housing technical sub-committee and related matters, 1943-1953.

The British Steelwork Association was formed in 1929 to promote the uses of structural steel and steelwork by propaganda and market development. Later on propaganda and research for sheet steel products was added. The Association was reorganised in 1937 on the basis of four member associations, the British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF), the Heavy Steel Associations, the Sheet Makers' Conference and the British Constructional Steelwork Association. Under its new constitution the basis of the Association was extended so that it was now in a position to undertake work for any section of the industry in developing the markets for iron and steel products and by-products. In 1947 the Association was wound up and its work was taken on by a new department of the BISF.

These papers were created and/or collected by the British Steelwork Association. They include a number of files originating with the British Iron and Steel Federation.

Further deposits are not expected.

Several deposits were made in the Centre by British Steel plc. The largest part of these is formed by the records of the British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) and its predecessor, the National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers. The deposits also include records of a number of regional and sectional iron and steel employers' organisations associated with the BISF, the statutory Iron and Steel Board and the nationalised British Steel Corporation.
