Manchester University Geographical Society Archive

Scope and Content

A very small collection of documents relating to the Manchester University Geographical Society. The archive is very fragmentary and does not contain the Society's minutes. Most of the documents date to the 1960s and 1970s.

Documents include: 1) constitutions, 1970-1973, mainly relating to the reorganisation of the Society in 1970; 2) lists of lectures by session 1965-1973; 3) alumni meeting papers, 1960-1970; 4) copies of the Society's newsletter "Globule" 1970-1977; 5)there is also a paper compiled by Geography students "The Geography Department and the UGC" [prob. early 1970s] and 6) minutes of the Departmental Staff-Student Liaison Committee 1973-1974 [these have been retained in the absence of a departmental archive for geography]

Administrative / Biographical History

Manchester University Geographical Society was established in 1922 or 1923. The purpose of the Society according to its constitution was "the stimulation of social and intellectual communication among persons interested in Geography". Membership was in practice drawn from the students and staff of the University's geography department.The head of the geography department was honorary president of the Society. The Society arranged a annual series of talks, as well as social events and the occasional field trip. It was also involved with alumni events. A journal, The Globe, was published by the Geographical Society from 1924 until at least the 1980s.

The collection is open to any accredited reader.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. Under the Act 2018 (DPA), The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for archiving and research purposes. In accordance with the DPA, UML has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately. Users of the archive are expected to comply with the Data Protection Act 2018, and will be required to sign a form acknowledging that they will abide by the requirements of the Act in any further processing of the material by themselves.

Conditions Governing Use

Photocopies and photographic copies of material in the archive can be supplied for private study purposes only, depending on the condition of the documents.

A number of items within the archive remain within copyright under the terms of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988; it is the responsibility of users to obtain the copyright holder's permission for reproduction of copyright material for purposes other than research or private study.

Custodial History

Believed to have been transferred to the University Library in the 1990s.
