Scope and Content

The collection consists of two diaries documenting private thoughts and daily life and a volume containing household accounts written by Isabella Martha Willis (nee Wale).

Administrative / Biographical History

Isabella Martha Wale (1809-1893) was daughter of General Sir Charles Wale (1765-1845), KCB and Isabella Johnson, daughter of the Reverend Thomas Johnson of Stockton-on-Tees. She was born at Oundle, Northamptonshire and married Sherlock Willis (1794-1873) in 1834 and lived with him in Swindon in the 1850s, they went on to have eight children.
