Professor W.E.H. Berwick's Working Papers for Text Book

Scope and Content

Papers relating to an unfinished draft of a projected text-book by Professor W.E.H. Berwick on Algebraic Number Theory. The work consists of eight chapters, with examples at the end.

Also contains an explanatory note by E.G. Phillips, Lecturer in Mathematics, pointing out the scope of the work, and its incompleteness in certain important respects.

Administrative / Biographical History

W.E.H. Berwick was acting head of the Department of Mathematics of the University College of North Wales between 1919-1920. From 1921-1924 he was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, until he returned to Bangor as Professor. He retired in 1941.

E.G. Phillips was appointed lecturer at the Department of Mathematics in 1924. He is described by J. Gwynn Williams in The University College of North Wales : Foundations 1884-1927 as the backbone of the department for nearly four decades and honoured by generations of students as an outstanding teacher.
