Beck & Company records

Records of Beck & Company relating to the operation of the private firm and its amalgamation with Lloyds, including:

• Operation (1836-1887): private ledger, profit and loss ledger, correspondence and memoranda book;
• Amalgamation (1880-1887): correspondence and financial statements;
• General (1843): photograph of signatures of partners.

Foundation

This private bank, also known as Shrewsbury & Welshpool Old Bank, was established in Shrewsbury in 1800. A branch was opened in Welshpool in 1816, following the failure of the Montgomeryshire Old Bank the same year.

Takeover

In 1880, partners P. A. Beck and John Spencer Phillips decided to sell the business to Lloyds. P. A. Beck retired and John Spencer Phillips became member of the Lloyds Board. He went on to become deputy chairman at Lloyds in 1888 and chairman a year later.
