Administrative / Biographical History

The Federation of Sailmakers of Great Britain and Ireland was founded in 1889, when it took into membership existing sailmakers' friendly societies in a number of ports. In time its headquarters came to be fixed in Hull. The First World War and changes in the industry brought a gradual decline of the Federation leading to its cessation in 1926/7.
