Scope and Content

Refers to Doc 1757: William Nix of Somersham, Huntingdonshire, farmer, in consideration of £2,000 mortgages his reclaimed land in Hale Fen, Coveney and Witcham (Bedford Level Lot 13 No 3), to Henry Francis of Norwich, gent, Henry Manning of St Ives, surgeon, Robert Whetham Allpress of St Ives, gent, repayment date being 12 Aug 1829 and interest 5% (discount: 4.25%). He also undertakes to convey copyhold pasture in Witcham which he has not as yet entered. Lease, appointment and release by way of mortgage, appointment and release of 5 pages, signed and sealed by Nix, Francis, Manning and Allpress, lease signed and sealed by Nix, appointment and release witnessed by John Curtis of Gray's Inn, gent, Richard Stephens his clerk, John Lawrence of St Ives, solicitor, and Charles John West of Norwich, lease witnessed by Curtis and Stephens, parchment provided by Morris of Bermondsey, engraved initial by Silvester of the Strand, duty stamps. Receipt for consideration on verso. Lease and release both endorsed as entered in the Bedford Level Company Register on 5 Mar 1829. Memorandum on verso of appointment and release notes that the principal money and interest had become payable to George Alfred Carthew of East Dereham, Norfolk, solicitor (who signs), George Taylor of Mattishall, Norfolk, surgeon, and Revd William Grigson of Whinbergh, Norfolk, and that William Nix paid them £750 in 1873 (see Doc 1759).
