Scope and Content

The South African papers of Lord Loch, High Commissioner in South Africa 1889-1895, ordered as follows.
* Bechuanaland: letters from the Administrator's office 1890-95.
* Basutoland: letters from the Resident Commissioner's office, 1890-1905.
* Cape Colony: papers and correspondence.
* Matabeleland and Mashonaland: includes letters from Sir John Moffat; correspondence to, from, and concerning Cecil Rhodes.
* Natal: letters from Government House 1890-1893.
* Pondoland: correspondence relating to the Pondo disturbances 1894.
* Swaziland: includes correspondence from administrators, and from Cecil Rhodes; drafts of the Swaziland Convention 1893-1894; correspondence etc. regarding the negotiations with President Kruger and the South African Republic.
* South African Republic (Transvaal): correspondence etc., including some on the Jameson Raid.
* Miscellaneous correspondence: 1889-1892.
* Colonial Office: includes letter books of his correspondence with Lord Knutsford (1889-1893) and with Lord Ripon (1893-1895).
* 'History of South Africa' :Correspondence, reports and reminiscences of Lord Loch. Privately published (seven copies) as Materials for the History of South Africa 1890 - 1895 (London: Spottiswode & Co, 1898) pp 1098.

Administrative / Biographical History

Lord Loch, GCB, GCMG, DCL, was Governor of the Cape Colony and High Commissioner in South Africa. During his term he was closely involved in Imperial and British South Africa Company expansion northwards, and in planning the administration for the newly-occupied territories of Bechuanaland, Mashonaland and Matabeleland.

Microfilmed at the University of York before being deposited at the National Records of Scotland with the rest of the Loch family papers.
