Administrative / Biographical History

Dundee was made a Royal Burgh by King William the Lion in the twelfth century, and its ancient rights were re-established by a Charter of King Robert the Bruce in 1327. The Great Charter of Charles I, dated 14th September 1641, finally confirmed these rights. The Burgh of Dundee was constituted a City by Royal Charter on 26 January 1889, the title of "Lord Provost of the City of Dundee" was conferred on the Chief Magistrate in 1892, and the City was constituted The County of the City of Dundee on 4 October 1894.

Dundee's boundaries were fixed and defined by Act of Parliament in 1831, and were subsequently extended ten times between 1859 and 1972. The Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973, established the City of Dundee District Council, embracing the City of Dundee, the Burgh of Monifieth, the District of Monifieth (except the Electoral Division of Newtyle and Kettins) and the Electoral Division of Longforgan. The new Council assumed office on 16 May 1975. The Act also authorised continuation of the use of the title of Lord Provost by the Chairman of the District Council.

The Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 replaced the existing Regional and District Councils with all purpose Unitary Authorities and the City of Dundee Council was established, comprising 36 Elected Members in the same number of Wards. One of the first decisions of the Council was to change its name to Dundee City Council. The Act also restricted the boundaries of the City which now comprises the area of the City of Dundee District Council except Tayside Electoral Division 30 (Monifieth) and 31 (Sidlaw-part).
