Papers of the Davies family, Menai Bridge

Scope and Content

This collection consists of documents relating to the Anglesey parish of Llandysilio, which incorporates Menai Bridge, including material relating to the Menai Suspension Bridge, the pier, waterworks, ferries, roads, allotments, woods and forests, the Enclosure Act for Llandysilio (1814), the Urban District Council, local politics and election results (1884, 1887, 1893, 1894). Items include map, plans, photographs, correspondence, newspaper articles, reports and other printed documents.

Also includes the diary of Jane Davies (1912-1916) with references to contemporary and personal news.

Administrative / Biographical History

Cadwaladr Davies of Menai Bridge, Anglesey was for many years a prominent figure in the Urban District Council, in Friendly Society circles, and a committed book collector who built up a substantial private library. He died in 1916.

His daughter Jane Davies, graduated from the University College of North Wales in 1901 with a BA and later MA to take up a career in teaching at the Towyn and Ffestiniog County schools. After her retirement from teaching in 1912 she was for some time a member of the Menai Bridge Council, being returned at the top of the poll in 1925. She died in February 1943.

Material is incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts ; there is no particular system of arrangement.
