Scope and Content

Papers of the Company of the Venerable Bede, formerly the Brotherhood of the Venerable Bede, including correspondence; membership lists and reports; programmes and records of meetings and activities; sermons and discussion papers; and newspaper cuttings, 1958-2006.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Brotherhood of the Venerable Bede was formed in 1958, with the aim of providing a form of pastoral support for clergy across the Diocese of York, providing them with the opportunity to connect with each other and to deepen their spiritual study in order to strengthen their ministry. The Archbishop of York became patron on the Brotherhood in 1959. Beginning with six members, the order grew in numbers over the first decades of its existence, introducing a Lay Brotherhood alongside the Brotherhood in 1970s.
In 1994, it was agreed to change the name of the Brotherhood to the Company of the Venerable Bede, in order to reflect the admission of women to the priesthood.
After a number of years of dwindling attendance, the Company was dissolved in 2006.
