Accounts of the estate of Anne Balfour, 1846-1850

Report of Donald Lindsay, accountant in Edinburgh, on the accounts relating to the Trust Estate of Kingsdale of Miss Anne Balfour snr, deceased, John Yule WS executor.

The estate comprised lands in Kingsdale, Balgarvie and Whitefield [Fife] and the accounts subsume the usual headings for factors accounts, feu returns and routine outgoings, into an account for the income and expenditure of the Trust as a whole, in which the earl of Leven [David Leslie-Melville, 8th earl of Leven] had an interest, having loaned money to the trustees, and his family was to benefit from legacies from the estate.

Volume I: 15 May 1846 - 1 September 1847.

Volume II: 1 September 1847 to 1 September 1848.

Volume III: 1 September 1849 to 2 September 1850.

Miss Anne Balfour of Kingsdale died in 1839, leaving most of her estate to her niece Anne Balfour, as well as legacies to Lady Leven and to Lady Elizabeth Jane Leslie-Melville.

David Leslie-Melville (1785-1860), 8th earl of Leven and 7th earl of Melville. Based at Melville House, he was given the honourary title of Lord Balgonie after the death of his grandfather. He joined the Royal Navy around 1800, rising to the rank of post-captain in 1812, and retired in 1814. He succeeded to the earldom on the death of his father Alexander in 1820. In 1831 he was elected as Representative Peer for Scotland, a post he held for 38 years. He was made a rear-admiral (retired) in 1846. He married Elizabeth Anne Campbell in 1824 and they had 2 sons and 4 daughters. His eldest daughter inherited the family estate of Melville on his death, as both sons had pre-deceased him. The titles went to his brother John Thornton.
