Scope and Content

Personal papers of Gerald B. Spiller, relating to his time as an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen, 1926 - 1930. The collection includes class certificates, 1926 - 1930 and a copy of R.A. Smith, Loch Etive and the Sons of Uisnach (London and Paisley: Alexander Gardner, 1885), awarded to Spiller for his success in the English graduation class, Jul 1927. There is also a small collection of papers relating to the quincentenary celebrations of the birth of Bishop Elphinstone, the opening of Elphinstone Hall, and the chairing of Sir Arthur Keith, Rector of the University, Jun 1931, comprising photographs, newspaper cuttings and a copy of Sir Arthur Keith's inaugural speech, 6 Jun 1931; and a copy of Report of the Committee Appointed to Select the Best Faces of Type and Modes of Display for Government Printing (London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1922, reprinted 1931).

Administrative / Biographical History

Gerald Bernard Spiller, son of Thomas Spiller, sacrist at Marischal College, Aberdeen, was born in Aberdeen on 26 Jan 1909. He graduated from Aberdeen University, MA 1930, LLB 1933, and began teaching in Stirlingshire in 1933. From 1940 - 1945 he served in the Royal Air Force, where he reached the rank of Flight Lieutenant. After the war, he returned to teaching, and by 1958 was headmaster of Bannockburn Secondary School. He married Elma P. Ryder (MA, Aberdeen, 1930) in Aberdeen on 20 Jul 1940.
