Lacking about ten leaves at the end, with pencil notes [in the hand of Caroline Anne Southey], together with various printer's marks. Lacks most of the documentation of the printed version. Folio 41 includes some text omitted from the printed edition.

Pasted into the volume at f.v is ms919: Autograph letter signed, Charles C Southey, son of Robert Southey, explaining what the manuscript was, as he had helped to finish the book after his father's final illness.Penrith, 13 April 1888. [1 sheet folded (4pp)]

Dr Andrew Bell (1753-1832), Church of England clergyman, was a pioneer of educational reform through the Madras system and the National Society for the Education of the Poor, and the founder of Madras College, St Andrews.

Robert Southey (1774-1843) was a Romantic poet, biographer and reviewer.
