Administrative / Biographical History

The Association of Clerks of the Second Division was appointed under an Order in Council of 21 March 1890. This association, commonly known as the Ridley Clerks Association, was in existence in 1895 and may have been responsible for a Second Division Civil Servants' petition in 1893. It had apparently become moribund by 1903 but was re-established in 1905. In 1910 it was re-named the Association of Clerks of the Second Division of the Civil Service and in May 1920 became the Association of Executive Officers of the Civil Service. In November 1920 it concluded an amalgamation agreement with the Association of Staff Clerks and Other Civil Servants under which full amalgamation commenced in January 1922 after one year in which the officers and executive committees of the amalgamating associations ran the new body, which was known as the Association of Executive Officers and Other Civil Servants, jointly. In 1930 the Association amalgamated with the Society of Civil Servants to form the Society of Civil Servants (Executive, Directing and Analogous).
